Emerging Approaches For Providing Support For Adults To Live In Their Own Homes
Speakers:
Mike Danneker, Executive Director of the Westside Regional Center Foundation (WCR), and
Olivia Patterson, Executive Director of H.O.M.E., will discuss emerging approaches to providing
support to enable adults with developmental disabilities to live in their own homes. WRC has been
at the forefront of facilitating home ownership and inclusive community living arrangements.
Various kinds of housing arrangements will be discussed, from home ownership, housing
bought or rented by a parent or guardian, cooperative living arrangements, and life-long
leasing options for people with developmental disabilities. You will also hear success stories
about WRC clients who live in their own homes with support.
Mike Danneker is currently Chairman of the Association of Regional Center Agency’s Housing Committee, and he
has been the Executive Director of WRC for over 20 years. He has been involved with the developmentally disabled
population in a variety of capacities for many years, including working on both independent and supported living in
California since the mid-70s. A strong advocate for equal access to education, he initiated the Integrated Consortium,
which works towards integrating the school systems. He created a housing development corporation called H.O.M.E.
(Home Ownership Made Easy), which buys low-cost property and converts it to affordable housing for clients. He
spearheaded Achievable, a non-profit fund-raising group whose mission is to improve the lives of people with
developmental disabilities from very low-income families by focusing resources on safe and affordable housing and also
on adaptive equipment. More recently, he was instrumental in forming the California Affordable Housing Institute
dedicated to persons with developmental disabilities.
Olivia Patterson is the Executive Director of Home Ownership Made Easy, a nonprofit affordable housing
corporation which provides housing for the developmentally disabled. She has worked 10 years in the real estate
industry buying, selling and rehabbing properties and originating mortgage loans. Olivia has spent her most recent years
involved with the Regional Center System advocating and promoting affordable, safe housing for the developmentally
disabled in communities of their choice. She is currently serving as co-chair for housing on the California Senate Select
Committee on Autism and Related Disorders.
