Thinking Outside the Box: Creating Successful Futures for Young Adults with ASD

Speakers:

A panel of three professionals and several young adults with ASD will discuss college, vocational training, and employment opportunities.

Fran D. Goldfarb, MA, CHES, is the mother of a 19 year-old son who has Asperger syndrome who is currently attending college. She is the Director of Family Support at the USC University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and serves as Parent Faculty in the Interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program at the USC UCEDD. Along with her husband, Jim Devine, she founded and has led the Los Angeles Asperger Syndrome Parent Support Group since 1996.

Joey Travolta has been drawing extensive media attention for helping kids and adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Joey currently runs Inclusion Films, a practical workshop designed to teach film production to developmentally disabled young adults. This workshop combines classroom instruction with real-world experience. Upon completing the program, the most qualified students are invited to join Team Diversity Media, a micro-enterprise that produces projects for clients in the community.

Sherry Beamer has 19 years of experience working with people with disabilities, helping them to live and work independently. Sherry holds a Masters degree in Social Work Administration and has held leadership positions within many service agencies. She has assisted people with disabilities in starting their own businesses individually and through the Jay Nolan Community Services and CAPC Micro-enterprise Grants and Kern Regional Center.

Each of the above speakers has been asked to bring a young adult with ASD to join them in their presentation.  Any teens who would benefit from this presentation are invited to attend this meeting with their parents!
